Fibreglass Pool Resurfacing on the Sunshine Coast

Fibreglass pools sit under QBCC's installation class, separate from the construction class that covers concrete pools. Non-structural maintenance and general repair of any pool, fibreglass included, sits under a third, narrower class. Work valued over A$3,300 needs a contractor licensed in a class that covers it.

What fibreglass pool resurfacing on the Sunshine Coast actually involves

QBCC's installation class covers the maintenance and general repair of prefabricated and fibreglass swimming pools and spas, and installing the coping and tiling that go with them. That is a different licence class from the one that covers concrete-pool interior finishes: the two pool types are licensed differently, not interchangeably.

Where the work is non-structural only

QBCC's maintenance and accessories class is limited to non-structural maintenance and general repair of swimming pools and spas. As with a concrete pool, work valued at A$3,300 or less is outside building-work licensing unless it is plumbing, drainage or gas fitting, which need a licence at any value.

Warranty on a fibreglass shell

The home warranty line is the same as for any pool: cover is for structural defects, including a defect that lets water escape through the shell, and QBCC says there is no cover for non-structural defects. A finish coat that fails is the kind of defect to ask about in writing before you sign. The main page sets out the claim period.

Ask whether the quote is for a coating over a sound shell or for repair of the shell itself, because the licence class and the warranty answer differ.

Fibreglass Pool Resurfacing on the Sunshine Coast — common questions

Is resurfacing a fibreglass shell a different licence from a concrete pool?

Yes. QBCC names separate construction and installation classes, and the installation class is the one that covers fibreglass and prefabricated pools, while the construction class covers concrete pools.

What if the work is only non-structural maintenance?

QBCC's maintenance and accessories class covers non-structural maintenance and general repair of swimming pools and spas.

Does home warranty cover a failed finish coat?

QBCC says there is no cover for non-structural defects. Ask the provider in writing what part of the job they treat as structural.
