Concrete Pool Resurfacing on the Sunshine Coast

The QBCC's construction class for concrete pools names ceramic tiling, painting, coping and internal finishes, and the maintenance and general repair of concrete swimming pools and spas. Resurfacing, waterline retiling and re-coping all sit in it. Work valued over A$3,300 needs a contractor licensed in a class that covers it.

What concrete pool resurfacing on the Sunshine Coast actually involves

The construction class is Part 55 of the QBCC Regulation, and the interior finish, tiling and coping of a concrete pool are named in it. A separate wall and floor tiling licence also covers cutting and fixing tiles, ceramic, glass, marble, slate, stone and terracotta among them, to spas, swimming pools and walls, so a retile can sit under either class depending on how the job is scoped and quoted.

Equipment in the same job

Maintenance and general repair includes the removal, replacement or addition of accessories or equipment, so a pump, filter or heater swapped during a resurface is covered by the same class. Installing pool heating systems is named on QBCC's own class page.

What the licence line does not cover

Plumbing, drainage and gas fitting need a QBCC licence at any value, and pool wiring, lights and pumps need a licensed electrician, so a resurface that moves equipment brings other trades in. The equipment page covers them. For a concrete pool the home warranty covers a structural defect that lets water escape through the shell, not surfacing outside the coping, as the main page sets out.

Ask the provider which licence class the quote is under, the pool construction class or the tiling licence, and in writing which part of the job they treat as structural.

Concrete Pool Resurfacing on the Sunshine Coast — common questions

Is a pebble or interior resurfacing job licensed work?

Yes, above A$3,300. Maintenance and general repair of concrete swimming pools and spas is named in the construction class, and work of that value or less is outside building-work licensing unless it is plumbing, drainage or gas fitting.

Does retiling the waterline need its own licence?

It can be done under the construction class's ceramic tiling, painting, coping and internal finishes line, or under the separate wall and floor tiling licence, which names swimming pools directly.

Is a pump swap part of the same job?

The licence class covers the removal, replacement or addition of accessories or equipment, but the electrical connection is work for a licensed electrician.
