Pool Renovation in Mooloolaba

Sunshine Coast Council names the Mooloolaba canals among its six canal systems. A pool in a canal backyard sits a few metres from a revetment wall that, the council says, the property owner owns and maintains, and pool backwash and run-off can cause major beach erosion and damage to such walls.

Pool Renovation around Mooloolaba

Mooloolaba's canal backyards run in rows, each lot with its own wall to the water. The council's canals page puts the wall on the owner: you own the revetment wall in front of your property and are responsible for maintaining it. A resurfacing job that drains a pool across the lawn to the water is a job on that wall's doorstep.

Swimming pool backwash and pool run-off can cause major beach erosion and damage to revetment walls, and the council says residents must contact its Customer Contact Centre for the current requirements for discharging pool backwash. Ask the provider before the job starts which method of discharge they will use and what the council told them.

A finished swimming pool with a blue tiled waterline and a pale paved surround, a black pool fence, a stacked-rock wall, a narrow strip of water and the back fences of neighbouring houses beyond — pool renovation, Sunshine Coast. Illustrative example.

Permits and Sunshine Coast Council rules

Whether a pool renovation here needs a building approval is for a building certifier to say. Under the Building Regulation 2021, repairs, maintenance or alterations to an existing structure are generally self-assessable, unless they change its floor area or height, affect a structural component or affect its fire safety system, and alterations to the fencing of a regulated pool are carved out of that.
