Pool Renovation in Maroochydore

Sunshine Coast Council lists the Maroochy Waters canals among its six canal systems. On a canal lot the owner owns the revetment wall in front of the property and is responsible for maintaining it, and the council says pool backwash and run-off can damage those walls. Draining a pool for a resurface is the step to settle first.

Pool Renovation around Maroochydore

A canal lot has a boundary a pool lot elsewhere does not: the water. The council's canals page says you, the property owner, own the revetment wall in front of your property and are responsible for maintaining it. Swimming pool backwash and pool run-off can cause major beach erosion and damage to revetment walls, and the council says residents must contact its Customer Contact Centre for the current requirements for discharging pool backwash.

So before a pool on a Maroochy Waters lot is emptied for resurfacing or retiling, ask the provider in writing where the water will go and whether they have rung the council. Queensland law adds a penalty: depositing pool backwash in waters, a roadside gutter or stormwater drainage is an offence, with a maximum of 1,665 penalty units where it is wilful.

Permits and Sunshine Coast Council rules

Whether a pool renovation here needs a building approval is for a building certifier to say. Under the Building Regulation 2021, repairs, maintenance or alterations to an existing structure are generally self-assessable, unless they change its floor area or height, affect a structural component or affect its fire safety system, and alterations to the fencing of a regulated pool are carved out of that.
